Overview

At the end of 2022, Warner Bros and HBO Max were looking for diverse creators to pitch original stories to feature as part of their "Only You" Animated Series. Chris pitched Burning Rubber, a project about the Handball Life in Coney Island. Burning Rubber started as a college project and ended up as an award-winning short film on HBO Max.

Challenges & Approach

This was our first episodic animation. Our goal was to produce Burning Rubber COMPLETELY in-house so that we could flex our production muscles. We also needed to find a way to elevate the Instagram comic to something that fit the quality of HBO.

The result

We accomplished our goal of a production that was solely produced by HBO. Dara and Chris directed and wrote the short. The RBS team animated and provided post production. Our sound engineer Nenjah wrote the score and we hired and directed the voice talent while the Max team arranged casting.

Burning Rubber won a number of awards, showed in festivals all over the world, and was nominated for an NAACP award.
